I lived in a country where most of the houses were built with concrete and bricks. We only used wood for furniture and cutlery. Although, more recently, some people have started staging wooden floors and wooden walls to separate the living area from dining area. However, the traditional houses still are built from brick and concrete.

When I moved to Australia, I thought the houses were built the same way as in my country, but I always wonder why I hear noises coming from outside of home and the adjacent room. Even when someone would be taking a shower, I listened to the sound of water running through. The doubts went vain when I first saw the house's structure; I was amazed to see wood slabs instead of bricks. I lived in a 4-bedroom semi-detached single-story house. But it all changed when I moved to Canada. For the first few months, I lived in a 3-bedroom apartment with its share of built-in noise. Just in few days, I was already over with the pesky noises of that busy locality. So, I decided to move to a house in a residential area away from busy streets.

On my first day in the three-story 8-bedroom house, I felt calm and happy with zero street noise. But I still wasn’t satisfied because, for some reason, I can be distracted by just a sound of a water droplet. Therefore, it was essential for me to be comfortable. However, it didn’t last even a day when I heard footsteps sound coming from the roof of my room. I screamed out of repulse because I loved the room, and I felt I belonged and was emotionally attached, but now this was enough for me. I have to start to befriend noises. But one day I thought to find out house on rent made of bricks and concrete. But there was none available, even there are concrete houses in Canada but there are none in Ontario. So I researched, and I found out that you can build a house with ICF walls with just 3% to 4% costlier than the traditional Canadian homes. So, in case If you are going to construct a house, I would say it is unfair to not consider ICF for being a bit costly. Probably if more people will start using concrete walls, it might end up equally inexpensive like a traditional home.

Let’s talk about ICF WALLS?

ICFs STAND for INSULATED CONCRETE FORMS. They are polystyrene forms that are stack-like blocks with steel rebar inside. Then concrete is poured between the ICFs. The houses can be built during any time of the year with these forms. You can use wood, bricks and vinyl can also be used and many other endless options for exterior of the house.

  • They can resist noise and fire up to a certain level. There is substantially low sound transmission between floors than in a wood-frame house.
  • The walls don’t rust or rot and insects making them a durable house. You will not have to worry about termites; they are pest-proof.
  • They last longer than a wooden house.
  • It's easy to change wires and make plumbing repairs.

Or, if that is not appealing to you.. Read this!!!
