Brantford is also known as The Telephone City because Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone at his home. For the first time, Alexander made a long-distance call to Paris, Ontario, 11km away. Brantford was incorporated as a city in 1877, located on the Grand River, 104 km southwest of Toronto in Ontario. The town stretches over an area of 72.47 km². It is named after a gallant Mohawk leader named Joseph Brant, a soldier, farmer, slave owner and a chivalrous leader in the American Revolutionary War.
