Sarnia Real Estate & Homes for Sale

Sarnia is a city in Southwestern Ontario, located on the south shore of Lake Huron, just across the St. Clair River from Eastern Michigan. Famous for its beautiful waterfront, Sarnia is a border community easily accessible to the United States.

The French explorer, Robert de La Salle, first sailed the area in 1679 and named it “The Rapids.” In the 1830s, the community was surveyed as Port Sarnia and incorporated as the Town of Sarnia in 1857. Sarnia started to grow as an important center for lake freighters and oceangoing ships. Sarnia was close to Petrolia and Oil Springs, which were drilled commercially since the 1860s. A budding oil refining industry emerged in East London and consolidated into Imperial Oil. With the improvement of railway and drainage, Imperial Oil relocated to Petrolia and then to Sarnia in 1898. The petrochemical industry expanded rapidly after the set up of a synthetic rubber factory by Polymer in 1942. Today, Sarnia has a diverse range of sectors and is developing in bio-based manufacturing and research.

Sarnia has a humid continental climate. The average snowfall received by Sarnia is 112cm. Lake Huron creates a seasonal lag by having a comparatively longer warm period after summers and a long cold period after winters than other Canadian cities. The average maximum temperature in summers can reach 28°C, whereas the minimum temperature is 17°C. In winters, the maximum temperature can remain -1°C, whereas the lowest temperature can plummet to -8°C. Thunderstorms can become quite severe from April to September. However, destructive weather such as the tornado event of 1953 is very rare in the area.

  • CONSEIL SCOLAIRE DE DISTRICT DES ÉCOLES CATHOLIQUES DU SUD-OUEST: It provides French-language catholic education in 21 elementary schools, six secondary schools and a combined school from kindergarten to Grade 12 in Ontario.
  • LAMBTON COLLEGE: The main campus is located in Sarnia, and it provides various courses in fire and public safety, academic upgrading, international education, corporate training, online and continuing education. The college also offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Sarnia's other private career colleges are the 5th Wheel Training Institute, Bluewater School of Hair Design, Can-Weld Training and Testing Centre, Huron Flight Centre, and On Edge Academy of Hair and Cosmetology.

The lake was originally called La Mer Douce. The bottom of the lake has a large number of shipwrecks which are destinations for scuba divers. In addition, 30 lighthouses on this beach are open to visitors, where visitors can go fishing, kayaking and sailing.
  • CENTENNIAL PARK: Centennial Park is a waterfront garden in Sarnia. The garden has rich natural surroundings, and it also has play equipment for children to enjoy during their visit. The Suncor agora concert park is located inside the park and within walking distance near the park. In addition, there are lovely shopping places and restaurants.
  • THE LAMBTON MALL: The Lambton Mall was opened in 1971 and is surrounded by London Road, Lambton Mall Road and Exmouth Street. In the 1990s, the mall went through expansion. There are around 100 stores to offer various products to the customers.
  • CANATARA BEACH: Canatara Beach has an animal park, beach volleyball courts, a skateboard and bikes park, and walking paths throughout the beach.
