The history of Surrey dates back to more than 6000 years ago. The first settlers here were Semiahmoo and Kwantlen First Nations People. The main attractions for such settlers were the fertile lands and the abundance of fishes and shellfish at the mouth of Fraser River, especially at Crescent Beach and the mouth of the Campbell River. In addition, the waterways other than the main rivers were a significant source of transportation for the settlers. They could navigate through such water streams and canals to collect food by hunting animals such as bears, elks, deer, and other birds. The settlement of Europeans brought much change in the mid 19th century. The new European settlers started logging the forest trees such as fir and cedar. The local people had not touched the forests wood for centuries; this was a horror for them. The new inhabitants started shaping the city of Surrey. The Canadian city of Surrey was named after the Surrey in England as one of the founders, H J Brewer believed that the city resembled Surrey in England to a large extent. The location of Surrey at the intersection of the Pacific Rim, the Vancouver area, and the United States border has helped the city in massive growth. Built in 1937, the Pattullo Bridge helped expand the city by facilitating the commuters in travelling to Vancouver or Burnaby but didn't want to stay there. In September 1993, Surrey was incorporated as a city with six town centres. The city is now home to more than 425,000 people.
